Multifunctional furniture: the strategy that optimizes space

Multitasking furnishings: in computer language the term multitasking indicates an operating system that allows the simultaneous execution of multiple processes, or a multi-programming.

By extension, one can refer to a mental attitude and culture that is elastic, ie that it is able to integrate the many life experiences and adapt to different situations, using different strategies depending on the context, that is a real intelligence adaptive.

Similarly, a multitasking furniture can adapt to different contexts, for example to the kitchen environment as well as to the study area, carrying out each time a different and specific role.

Multitasking furniture or furnishing are a strategy almost obligatory for optimization of space, making it effective in solving various problems of living, especially in apartments of small size, in the sign of a modern intelligence and housing adaptability.

Multifunction shelf: a plan office with L-section

In my free hand drawing I illustrate my project idea for a large shelf with function desk-study: an unusual and rational station office where to work or study, on a small wall of a room in the house, which may be the study room, the bedroom or the living room.
This floor bracket has a section in the shape of L, developing along a length of about 150 cm to a depth of 60 cm, with a backrest of 60 cm high.

The structure is reinforced with a tubular core of self-supporting steel which confers resistance to the load and allows to use the inner space with drawers of various sizes.
The lining of the shelf can be in dark oak wood, giving a refined and sober layout that can be integrated harmoniously in a stylish lounge area-representation.



The shelf is characterized by a box-thick (about 8 cm), which allows to exploit also the internal volume, both of the horizontal top of the backrest vertically.
In fact, I thought of using the thickness of the countertop, obtaining three drawers: a large central drawer and two side drawers, arranged in symmetry.

The middle drawer is useful for storing papers and documents; the side drawers can be used to contain the small stationery and accessories for your computer.

In the vertical thickness, which serves as a back shelf, has been into two containers, side-scrolling on telescopic rails, which can be practical to catalog collections of CDs, videos, diskettes for the PC and more.

A tubular lamp with LED light illuminates in directional mode the studio floor.
A power strip mounted on the lower portion of the back is essential for connecting your computer, Hi-Fi system and to control lighting of the lamp.

A metal chair upholstered in red faux leather, with anatomic sinouous back is convenient for an ergonomic sitting at the desk top.

The news of this project consists in furnishing obtained in a well defined air volume and with a small footprint, a modern and creative workspace, ie a super accessoried workspace comfortable for two people, leaving ample freedom of movement for the legs below the office top.

The multitasking shelf becomes a working top in the kitchen

In the following representation, I represented the kitchen version of my idea of the multitasking shelf, whose metal structure is covered in beech wood, suitably treated to impart a greater resistance to moisture and wear.

Alternatively, the coating can be customized with a colored laminated or with other synthetic materials; the dimensions of the shelf can be variable depending on the available space in the kitchen.

The front of the central drawer reveals, surprisingly, a plan plywood completely removable, which serves admirably as a traditional table to make pasta at home.
The small room on the right contains a strategic cutting board, which is also fully removable retractable; the tray on the left can hold cutlery, ideally located next to the washing area of the kitchen.



The back wall internally hides a telescopic sliding cart, specifically to accommodate a set of knives.
Immediately below, a long cylindrical space allows accommodation tailored classic rolling pin to roll the dough.
On the other hand, another removable basket may contain various tools such as corkscrews, nutcracker and so on.

On the right side of the vertical panel is fixed in a grid of steel wire to hold jars of spices; a ring terminal acts as a support to a glass spoon holder.
Two sockets mounted at both ends allow the use of various dynamic food processor, such as a coffee maker, toaster and mixer multifunction.

A minimal stool, metal and beech plywood, complete this station equipped kitchen, dream of every housewife as adaptable to the preparation of culinary delights is according to ancient traditions, both with the use of more sophisticated technologies.

A well designed in every detail can make it functional even one wall anywhere in the house, until you can summarize multiple functions into a single piece of furniture.
