The radon gas is an invisible form of pollution that settles unfortunately in our houses. Contrary to outdoor pollution known risks to human health, we do not know or we poorly known the risks and harmful potentialities produced by the presence of radon gas.

The radon gas is not perceived by human senses because it is odorless, colorless and tasteless, but despite this, after a series of studies on it, the radon gas has been defined as a second cause for the occurrence of lung cancer.

What is radon gas

gas radon Radon is a naturally occurring chemical element, radioactive, belonging to the family of so-called noble or inert gases. The starting substance that produces this gas is uranium, in fact, through a series of nuclear reactions it comes to the production of this invisible harmful gas.

We find this type of gas on the entire earth's crust obviously in different percentages, it is consequently also contained in some building materials, such as tuffs, pozzolane, bricks and stones of other types.

The radon gas is therefore a natural contaminant that has always existed, that man has no responsibility of, nor indeed since this is only a victim, because this form of gas moves in the air freely through convective motions.
If we are outdoors its presence is harmless, but placed inside enclosed areas that are not adequately ventilated, its high concentration poses to threat human health.

How to take action to limit the damage caused by radon gas

To limit the concentration or even the penetration of radon gas in our houses, we can intervene trying to ensure an adequate number and volume of air exchange; we can also intervene by ensuring proper sealings of joints between floor and wall, allowing ventilation of the foundations through the ventilated crawl spaces.

By doing this you are going to operate on concentrations of radon gas where it is not possible to avoid them. To measure the concentration, there are sensors capable of detecting this type of radiation, which in technical jargon are called ionizing radiation.

The new technology has allowed us to study this phenomenon in a fairly precise, creating devices which, however, require the presence of a specialized technician and of confirmations obtained in laboratories, but the devices that work without the aid of a specialized technician in these cases simply place them in the place where you have to make a statement and turn on the battery, so the data collected can then be read by a PC, without the aid of external structures.

One of the causes that facilitates the entry in our homes of rich air radon gas is the temperature difference between indoor and outdoor environment. The effect that is generated, takes the name of the chimney effect.

sbalzi termici Therefore to reduce this phenomenon, one should try to keep under control the temperature inside of their own houses, so as to avoid the formation of excessive thermal jumps. So it is important to insulate floors and walls that are in direct contact with the ground and any cracks that may contribute to the passage of gas, especially if it is an old historic building with big, stone walls.

In the case of basements or crawl spaces, it would be recommended to increase air circulation, leaving windows ajar where possible, or using fans which increase air circulation expelling it outside and entering into other, thus creating a continue circulation.

In new houses, it may be helpful to create cavities under the floor using igloos, these are nothing more than empty plastic formwork, which are mounted generally interlocking that serve precisely to raise the share of wear compared at ground level, so as to create an adequate space for ventilation which prevents the penetration of radon gas in the house.

You can also think of preparing perforated ducts between the floor and the floor of the countryside through which it will be possible to extract the contaminated air from radon gas before it is absorbed by the floor.

Still other solution would be to have a basin of about 2 meters, preferably placed at the center of the house. This basin, assisted by a piping system, will be able to suck the polluted air of radon gas before it enters the dwelling.

In conclusion, we have defined that in nature exist invisible forms of pollution just as the radon gas, from which, however, we can protect ourselves by taking some simple precautions.
