Large indoor plants

The jungle effect has recently convinced everyone: from garden designers, who usually use it in their design works, to green enthusiasts, who have sought inspiration in magazines and social media profiles, to reproduce it within thier homes.

Especially in larger homes the jungle effect is a solution that continues to be fashionable. What to do, however, if tour house is too small?

You might think that you should give up on large indoor plants if your house is too small, but that's not the case at all: the only important thing is to opt for a single species, as required by the new trend of indoor green.

What types of plants to choose and where to place them?
Here are our suggestions.

The fiddle-leaf fig or Ficus lyrata for a landscape effect

We've been recently forced to stay at home and we have all experienced, firsthand, the importance of having an indoor green area. In the absence of balconies, terraces, verandas and outdoor spaces in general this becomes an even bigger need.

If we are attracted to the idea of living the interiors as if we were in the garden, the suggestion is to opt for individual plants: the landscape effect is guaranteed.

Which species to bet on?
The Ficus lyrata, for istance, is perfect for this purpose. The intense green of its leaves with a slightly wavy edge gives pleasant visual suggestions to domestic environments and to those who live inside every day.

The fiddle-leaf fig is also very easy to grow. It usually develops with a single stem if placed in pots, it can then develop larger leaves that, with its increasingly heavier weight, can lead to the curvature of the stem. To prevent this from happening it is advisable to trim the stem in the spring, useful for encouraging the growth of newer and smaller branches.

The pot should be filled with a soil rich in organic substances and then you must place at the bottom of the pot a thin layer of sand or other material necessary for the drainage of the water.

When and how to water Ficus lyrata?

Let's move on to watering: in the spring-summer period, you must water the Ficus frequently, avoiding dangerous stagnations; in winter, however, watering should be kept to a minimum.

Every 7-10 days, small quantities of non-calcareous water, at room temperature, can be sprayed directly on the leaves.

Ficus lyrata: Where to place it

The Ficus can be placed in any corner of the house but it is advisable to choose well-lit rooms, where the temperature is constant, between 15° and 20° degrees.

How about placing it in a metal vase next to the sofa, near a large window?

Our moments of relaxation, thanks to the Ficus, will be even more comfortable and healthy. This plant, in fact, is one of the indoor plants that cleans the air, eliminating from domestic spaces the dangerous polluting particles. But not only that: giving a Ficus to someone as a gift is equivalent to wishing good luck.

The great look of the broad leaves of Anthurium clarinervium

When choosing a large apartment plant, unlike small specimens, often, in addition to a matter of taste you can also express a side of your personality.

Broad-leaved plants fit well in vibrant and chaotic contexts making this aesthetic chaos look a lot better.

We can focus on species that certainly do not go unnoticed, in order to  accentuate this effect, species such the Anthurium clarinervium are capable of giving movement to domestic spaces.

Its cultivation is quite simple: the plant requires constant soil moisture and the use of small quantities of water.
It also prefers very bright positions. It should not be exposed, however, to direct sunlight, which can quickly ruin the characteristic foliage.

This particular plant is perfect near a TV, a bookcase or an armchair with stylized lines, better if positioned in a terracotta vase.

The Licuala grandis is the best choice for empty walls

Do you have a space in the living area or a wall at the entrance that you don't know how to furnish?

The oriental charm of Licuala grandis and its large leaves look like suggestive bright green origami.
It is an uncommon species of palm tree, appreciated for its relatively small size, slow growth and spectacular visual impact.

How to grow the Licuala grandis

Licuala grandis prefers a semi-shady position even if it can bear sunlight; in case of high humidity, it must be sheltered from the wind which can ruin the leaves.

Potted olive tree: a tropical touch

Who said that indoor environments are not suitable for hosting fruit trees?

If the living area of your home is dominated by light the best choice is an olive tree; this does not require excessive care and, if the conditions are ideal, it will give you a lot of satisfaction.

As already mentioned the olive tree loves heat therefore it must be placed in a corner as sunny as possible: this will guarantee a healthy growth of your tree.

Try also to provide the right water supply: to begin with, making sure that the soil is dry between one watering and another. In particular, if placed in a medium-sized pot, it is sufficient to water it once a week in the summer, one every two to three weeks in the other seasons.

The olive tree suffers humidity and water stagnation which can cause root rot and other life-threatening diseases.

It's advisable to choose terracotta pots that allow better perspiration than plastic ones and prepare a soft and draining soil. It is also useful to place gravel at the bottom of the container.

From an aesthetic point of view it is advisable to prefer the colored terracotta vases to match them in harmony with the furnishings. We can also decide to decorate the classic ones with some DIY ideas.

Decorating the vases?
A choice that may not even be necessary because the protagonists of the green corner are the individual indoor plants which, as the essayist Mario Andrea Rigoni reminds us: are the only living beings in this universe that do not produce noise or waste, only beauty.

What are you waiting for? It's time to make your home environment fashionable with a large houseplant.
