Lilium, the plant with an irresistible fragrance

Commonly known as Lillies, Liliums are bulbous plants belonging to the Liliaceae family, originating in Europe, Asia and North America.
Usually cultivated for ornamental purposes, on the ground or in pots, lilliums are often used also as cut flowers in bouquets because of their elegant shape and bright colors.

Depending on the species lilies can be white, pink, yellow, orange, red, lilac, purple and are characterized by an umbrella-shaped corolla made up of six petals and six stamens ending with pollen bags of red-brown color.
The stem can also vary widely in its height, according to the variety of the lily, and can go from 6 cm to 2 meters.

Lilium flower: soil and irrigation

The planting of the lilium should occur in the autumn period, or better yet in the spring, in order for the flowers to be blooming during the summer. The bulb should be positioned up to 2 cm deep.

How to plant lilium's bulbs

The ideal soil for growing lilliums is soft and enriched with a good percentage of organic material.

These plants love moist soils and therefore they should be watered regularly but in moderation, especially in the vegetative phase and in the flowering period. Liliums are particularly prone to root rottenness that can be caused by water stagnation.

For this reason it is recommended to place a bed of stones at the bottom of the vase.

Fertilization is very important and should be performed constantly until the stem dries out and can be excised.

Light requirements

All lilium species love sunny places, which favor the growth of their roots and stems.
It is better to avoid direct radiation which could cause leaves and flowers to dry out, therefore the vase must be positioned in areas of partial shade.

The lilium needs a lot of indirect sunlight
Just like any other plant the lilium must be protected from air currents and excessive cold, although it is a species that can tolerate low temperatures.

Repotting the Lilium: how and when

When to proceed with the repotting of the lilium?
Lilliums should be repotted when the roots come out of the water drainage holes.

Although there may be differences based on the variety of the lilliums, generally, the pot diameter should not exceed 30 cm. It is also recommended to plant no more than 3 bulbs in one pot.

Dangerous diseases and parasites

Lilium is a pretty strong plant, but this does not mean that it cannot be subject to attacks by parasites.

The worst enemy of the lilium is the Lilioceris lilii beetle, also known as lily criociera, easily treatable with systemic insecticides.

Also, pay attention to slugs and snails, especially if the lilium is cultivated on the ground, as well as to mold which should be avoided with proper drainage and aeration.

Main species of Lillium

There are many lilliums species and they vary in shape and, above all, color.

Within the same species you can find more variants that make the lilium a very particular plant.
We are going to analyze some of the varieties that can be easily found in Italy.

Lilium auratum or Golden lily

The lilium auratum, of Japanese origin, is one of the most beautiful specimens of this species.
The flower, from 15 to 20 cm wide, is white with a yellow stripe funnel-shaped inside the petals and brown spots all around. It is also a very fragrant flower.

There are two different specimens: the 'Platyphillum', the most widespread, taller and more vigorous and the lesser known 'Praecox'.
The first can grow from 1 to 2 meters in height in its natural habitat.
In Europe they are of more modest dimensions but the flowers remain large and fragrant!

Lilium longiflorum or Easter lily

The Lilium longiflorum, also known as Easter lily, is also originally from Japan.
The long flowering plant is characterized by white flowers, slightly funnel-shaped, just like other lilliums.

Lilium longiflorum can grow up to reach a meter in height and the species with stems are 7 to 14 cm long and rich in shiny green leaves.

Lilium candidum or lily of Saint Anthony

Better known as lily of St. Anthony or Madonna Lily, the lilium candidum is one of the most common. Originally from the Balkans and western Asia, it is characterized by large, trumpet-shaped white flowers that get yellowish at the base of the petals.

The stem, full of leaves, may reach an height of up to 2 meters but, usually, it never grows past 1.2 meters.

The Lilium candidum adapts very easily to any type of soil, which is the reason why it is widely used as an ornamental plant.

Lilium lancifolium or Tiger lily

The lilium lancifolium is a particularly flashy one, it is also known as Tiger lily because of its orange flowers dotted with brownish spots.

When its flowers open, from July to August, the petals fold backwards and the stamens and the pistil get fully protracted forward. A feature that makes it even more original.

Lilium Pink Perfection or Red Trumpet

Also known by the name of red trumpet, the lilium Pink Perfection is one of the lilies with the brightest colors.

From June to August the plant, which can grow up to a meter in height, produces large dark red coloured flowers that do not go unnoticed.

Lilium Casablanca

We certainly find the lillium Casablanca among the species of lilium most suitable for pot cultivation.

Lilium Casablanca
Very decorative and simple to cultivate, with its large white flowers, it is one of the most fragrant lilliums and for this reason it is among the most used flowers for bouquets.
