Art Deco style

When it comes to art deco, the luxurious Great Gatsby-style settings immediately come to mind and it is understandable that you immediately start thinking about bringing that atmosphere into your home.

Art deco is a phenomenon that has involved the world of art, architecture, design and fashion, becoming an icon especially in America in the early decades of the twentieth century.

After more than a hundred years there are still some characteristics of this decorative style that are re-proposed all around the world when it comes to furniture, both in a classic and contemporary way.

Art Deco: the recurring themes

Unlike the typical style of Art Nouveau, which developed almost in the same years and characterized by sinuous shapes, the Art Deco style is recognizable for the choice of zigzag patterns, chess and sunburst elements.

The Art Deco style for ceramic coverings

Perfect for those who want to give a touch of elegance and refinement to their bathroom is the Deco Epoque interior tile by Iperceramica.

It is a stoneware wall tiles sold in the 20x20 cm format which is particularly appropriate given the historical period it wants to evoke.

It can be installed both on the wall and on the floor, or combined with single-color tiles that recall the cream, black and dove-gray tones that characterize it.

Another example for decorating the bathroom with Art Deco style coverings are the tiles from the Art Deco Trends line by Mainzu.

The intent of the designers was precisely to evoke the visual harmony typical of the 1920s, with a collection entirely in black and white. The names of the different decorations refer to the classy settings that characterized that period: Gatsby, Astoria, Duke and Charlestone.

Art Deco: the recurring colors

The colors that characterize the Art Deco style interiors are pastel tones with contrasting colors such as blue and pink or green and beige. You can also find bright colors such as purple or petrol green, combined with bright decorations in gold or silver.

The palettes that are created this way are always highly requested and the best thing to do is always to dare by combining different materials.

The Art Deco style for upholstered furniture

Art Deco-style furnishings in pastel colors are still very trendy today, especially in the world of armchairs and sofas.

Ottiu, a Portuguese company, has decided to focus on the reinterpretation of the Art Deco that characterized the golden years of Hollywood, designing a unique collection of furniture.

The Greta armchair is a tribute to the actress Greta Garbo. Upholstered in draped velvet and supported by long legs in antiqued brass, finished with extremely elegant brass details, this armchair is designed to adapt to any environment where you want to add a refined touch.

The typically Art Deco elongated curves also inspired the Muranti Furniture company when they where designing the Ruby sofa.

The lines that characterize it are highlighted by the golden profiles that decorate the soft ruby red velvet.

Art Deco: recurring materials

The typical refinement of Art Deco furnishings is characterized by the use of refined materials that alone are able to embellish an environment such as inlaid woods, lacquers, leathers and golden details.

Therefore, if you want to choose pieces in Art Deco style to furnish some environments, you must focus on iconic elements, to be combined with more neutral accessories that highlight them even more.

The Art Deco style for wooden furniture

Wood is a widely used material in the Art Deco style, but intended as a precious material. The wooden deco furniture, in fact, can be recognized in the meantime by the choice of essences that are often very precious, such as ebony, rosewood, oak, walnut, cherry or briar. Or the wood can be enhanced with inlays or lacquers.

Mobili Bertelè is a company that proposes classic style furnishings, revisited in a contemporary key.

These bedside tables, for example, are made of oak briar with central inlay and decorative brass edges. An exclusive piece for bedrooms with a refined style.

One of the most iconic furnishings in the Art Deco style still in production is the Barrel chair by Cassina Spa. Made by Frank Lloyd Wright in 1937 to complete the initial project of 1904, it is a piece of furniture that is characterized by the considerable technical constructive complexity.

This chair is made up of 37 pieces carefully connected to the other parts, all the joints are made from the same solid wood and the final structure is meticulously finished by hand. You can choose between the structure in natural cherry, walnut or black stained or in canaletto walnut and the cushion in leather or fabric.

The Art Deco style for metal objects

Another material often used for Art Deco furniture is metal, in particular with a golden finish with a shiny effect.

This mirror by Maisons Du Monde recalls Art Deco both for the curved shapes and for the fine decoration with golden vertical lines, which enhance its peculiarities. It is perfect for an elegant hall or for a bedroom that you want to give a refined touch.

Even Art Deco lamps are almost always characterized by metal details and shapes with elongated curves.

The finishes of the metal part are available in various finishes ranging from bronze, nickel to gold.

Tropical Art Deco

We cannot talk about Art Deco without considering the phenomenon of the city of Miami: between 1923 and 1943 many edifices were built in the Art Deco Historic Districts, which is the place with the greatest concentration of Art Deco buildings.

In Florida, Art Deco develops a decorative trend characterized by recurring elements such as flamingos, palm trees and flowers and pastel shades such as pink, light blue, yellow and mint green. Because of this, in order to define the style of Miami we can speak of Tropical Art Deco.

An example to furnish the living room with a tropical Art Deco touch can be the Palm wallpaper by Eijffinger which is characterized by a decorative vegetal motif, with tropical leaves which, thanks to the pastel pink shades, recall the typical style of Miami beach.
